Frank Serpico Biography and Early Life

Frank Serpico is a former New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer. He was born Francesco Vincent Serpico on April 14, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York City, United States and he was also raised there by his parents. He was born to his parents named Vincenzo Serpico (Father) and Maria Serpico (Mother), Italian immigrants from Marigliano.

At the age of 17, Serpico enlisted in the United States Army and he was stationed for two years in South Korea as an Infantryman.

Frank Serpico attended Fort Hamilton High School, Brooklyn. He later studied at Brooklyn College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

 

Frank Serpico Career

Frank Serpico joined the New York City Police Department (NYPD) as a probationary patrolman on September 11, 1959 and he later became a full patrolman on March 5, 1960. On February 3, 1971, Serpico was shot during a drug arrest attempt at 778 Driggs Avenue, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Serpico retired from service on June 15, 1972, one month after receiving the New York City Police Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor. In October 2014, Interview published by Politico entitled ‘The Police Are still out of Control… I Should Know’ Serpico addresses contemporary issues of Police violence.

In 2015, Serpico ran for an office on the town board of Stuyvesant, New York, where he lives, this was his first entrance into politics, but he lost the election.
